01/17/08 Fond du Lac, WI. A Miracle Mile Lotto Celebration

Friar Tuck’s Lucky 18, winners of $1,000,000 Lotto , meet the press Ma / Pa’s store predicts it’s the first of many Wisconsin Lotto winners this year Madison,WI., They’ve worked together for years. They’ve played together for years. Now, 18 Fond du Lac restaurant employees can say they also win together.

The 18 staff members of Friar Tuck’s Restaurant in Fond du Lac met the press today as the new $1,000,000 winners in the Wisconsin Lottery’s Holiday Millions Raffle game. They arrived at the event at Ma Pa’s Grocery Express, in the heart of the city’s famed Miracle Mile, in a motorcoach bus with a police escort. All 18 winners wore Ma Pa t-shirts. After receiving the ceremonial check for $1,000,000 from Mike Edmonds, Lottery Director, the group’s Rose Lefeber said although they were splitting the money equally it would touch each of their lives in different ways. For some of us there are kids and college, or a new toy or a great trip; for others there are investments, or expenses like medical care, Lefeber said. This money allows us to approach our situations more comfortably. After taxes, each member of Friar Tuck’s Lucky 18 will receive approximately $38,000. For selling the $1,000,000 Holiday Millions Raffle ticket one of nine tickets the group bought at Ma Pa’s the store earned a $20,000 commission from the Lottery. In presenting a symbolic check for that commission to store manager Phil Moses, Edmonds revealed that Ma Pa’s sold more Holiday Millions Raffle tickets than any store in the state of Wisconsin. We talk about the ‘Miracle Mile’ in Fond du Lac and there is a lot of good lottery luck here to be sure, said Edmonds. Never forget though that a lot of that good luck is the result of hard work that’s done here at Ma Pa’s. Edmonds said it was fitting that the Lottery should be back in Fond du Lac for yet another winner’s celeberation as the Lottery kicks off its 20th anniversary year. Phil Moses told Edmonds that he should plan on coming back again soon.

We’ve started 2008 with a million dollar winner and we’re going to have even more winners as the year goes along, said Moses. Each member of Friar Tuck’s Lucky 18 contributed $10 when the group went out to by its Holiday Millions Raffle tickets between Christmas and New Year’s. They bought nine $10 tickets at Ma Pa’s and nine at another Fond du Lac store. One of the nine Ma Pa’s tickets ticket #300142 proved to be the $1,000,000 winner in the Holiday Millions Raffle drawing held on January 1. The group is now in the process of getting a court order to have the $1,000,000 prize split equally among its members. Wisconsin law requires the Lottery to pay a prize to one person, unless directed otherwise by the courts. Holiday Millions Raffle began on November 4, 2007 with 500,000 $10 tickets available. On January 1st the Lottery drew 511 ticket numbers from the 368,477 tickets that were ultimately sold. The first ticket Wisconsin Lotto number drawn became the game’s $1,000,000 top prize winner. The next ten were each worth $100,000. Five hundred additional ticket numbers won $1,000 each. Only one of the $100,000 prizes has not yet been claimed. That unclaimed ticket was sold in Neenah. Of the 500 $1,000 winning tickets sold around the state, 370 have so far been redeemed.
