Faithful Oregon Powerball Player Wins $10,000

02/04/08 Portland, Oregon: Toilose Mapapalangi of Portland calls herself a faithful Powerball player. To add to her excitement, and give her luck as many chances to work as she can, Toilose buys her Powerball tickets at different locations. Well, the ticket bought at 7-Eleven, on N Lombard St., in Portland, turned out to be the luckiest one so far. Toilose matched four of five numbers, plus the power ball, to become a $10,000 winner. Her winning ticket was one of two winning $10,000 tickets, and overall, one of 9,730 winning tickets for Oregon Lottery Powerball players from the drawing.

Toilose, a native of Tonga, has eight children. She was excited to win, but seemed even more excited because her granddaughter’s 1st birthday was the next day. The timing is just great, said Toilose.

Toilose didn’t know which Lottery retailer she’d purchased her winning ticket from until her ticket was verified, and the Lottery’s customer service representative checked for her. Toilose hopes to be back one day to win the Powerball jackpot.

10/7/2007 You had to excuse Alice Wood of Gearhart if she was all shook up as she claimed her $400,000 Powerball Power Play prize at the Lottery office in Salem. Alice had just returned from a trip to Graceland, in Memphis, when she discovered she was a big winner.

Alice purchased a single combination of Quick Pick numbers for three consecutive drawings. In the third drawing, she matched five numbers, without the power ball, for a $200,000 prize. Alice had selected the Power Play option when she purchased her ticket at Albertson’s, in Beaverton. The Power Play number 2 was drawn, doubling her prize to $400,000. I had the ticket checked, and the clerk said, ‘I think you’ve won $200,000.’ The prize amount was quickly verified as $400,000, when it was confirmed as a Power Play ticket. Alice will usually play Powerball when the jackpot gets near the $100 million mark. She always uses the Quick Pick method to select her numbers, and will usually play Power Play.

Alice says a portion of her prize money will go toward remodeling projects around the house, and an artist studio for her husband.

Better Late, Than Almost Never

Tom Ottman of Battleground, Washington, was very happy that he got around to checking the Powerball tickets sitting at home on his desk. First, because one was a $200,000 winner, and second, it was from January 17, almost eight months from the drawing.

Tom wasn’t sure how long he had to claim his prize. Oregon Powerball players have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prize. I was worried that it might have been a six-month time frame. I couldn’t believe it when I checked the ticket, said Tom. I thought I was looking at the wrong date or something. He headed to the 7/Eleven on NE Weider St., where he had purchased the ticket. The clerk checked and confirmed that the ticket was a winner. Ryan checked the numbers again, and confirmed that he was a $200,000 winner. Tom called his wife, Pam, on the walk home from the store. She said she was on the other line, and I told her you need to hang up and talk to me. Tom gave her the good news, and the excitement started.

When I heard the news, the wheels started turning, said Pam. What should we do with the money? Beginning a college savings account for their soon-to-be seven year old twins was at the top of the list. It’s like you’ve been given a gift, and with it comes responsibility, Pam said.

Tom and Pam’s winning ticket is among the 282 Match 5 Powerball tickets sold in Oregon since Powerball began in April 1992. Overall, Oregon Lottery players have won more than $784 million in prizes playing Powerball, and its predecessor, Lotto America.
