Lottery Headquarters to Reopen, Gustav Cuts Sales in Half Louisiana Lottery Corporation headquarters in Baton Rouge will reopen on Monday, Sept. 8, after Hurricane Gustav struck the state's coast on Labor Day. The Lottery's News Orleans office remains closed until further notice; however, other regional offices in Lafayette, Alexandria, Shreveport and Monroe are keeping regular business hours. Lottery winners of over $600 are required to claim their prize at a regional office.
Roughly 450 of the Lottery's 2,600 retailers are unable to sell tickets as of Saturday morning, down from nearly 800 on Wednesday. The Lottery expects this number will continue to decrease as retailers return from storm evacuations and their businesses regain electrical power required to operate. Toward that end, Lottery sales for the week through Friday were $2.4 million, less than half of what they were for the same time period last week, although daily figures are improving as more retailers become operational. "High jackpots typically have a positive impact on our overall sales," said Lottery President. "With a $92 million Powerball jackpot for the Sept. 6 draw, Gustav has truly rained on that parade. The good news is our employees are safe and we will continue to work with our vendors to assist our retailer partners in their business recovery efforts."

After nearly four months of keeping a secret, 73-year-old Carl Hunter of Metairie claimed the $97 million Powerball jackpot from the Jan. 16 drawing at Louisiana Lottery headquarters. His prize was the largest single amount won in the Louisiana Lottery’s history. The owner of a construction company, Hunter wanted to make sure his outstanding jobs were complete before closing up shop. He said he plans to use his winnings to retire, travel and rebuild a camp he lost during Hurricane Katrina. Hunter was picking up a gallon of milk for his wife when he decided to also purchase one Powerball quick pick at West Metairie Shell on West Metairie Avenue in Metairie.
