She woke up to a news bulletin announcing that a winning MEGA Millions ticket worth more than $368,000 was sold at her neighborhood Bel Air Market. She woke up, looked at the TV, recognized the store and the winning numbers and then went back to sleep. As Karen Hofer explained today when she came forward to claim her prize, When I woke up again, I remembered that and thought, ‘It must have been a dream,’ but it was too real to be a dream. So I got up and checked the numbers and I realized I had won!
It doesn’t sound too strange, except that the channel she was watching doesn’t carry news, and certainly not local news. So was it a dream? I guess I’ll never know, said Hofer. The new winner said she bought her ticket at the Bel Air Market on Elk Grove Boulevard like she always does choosing the same numbers each week. What does Hofer plan to do with her prize? I’ll help a few people out and save most of it for retirement, but I am really excited because now I can get a new refrigerator!

SACRAMENTO Feeling the New Year would be lucky and having witnessed her husband playing Lottery games before, a Tustin woman decided the New Year’s Raffle was the right game for her. As she explained to a Lottery employee by phone this afternoon, her feeling was right. I would have never imagined this, said the Tustin woman, who prefers to remain anonymous. This was the first time I have ever purchased a Lottery ticket.
The new winner said she bought her ticket in the neighboring city to the west, Santa Ana, at the Olmos Market on South Bristol Street. Then, she put the purchase out of her mind. That is, until today, when she decided she should check the winning numbers online. Of course, her ticket number matched the winning number for the last and final New Year’s Raffle grand prize of $1 million. My first reaction was to thank God, being that I was in disbelief, said the California Lottery’s latest million-dollar winner. Then I called my husband. She thinks she might buy another house and a new car with her prize-money.
The New Year’s Raffle offered the best odds ever of any California Lottery game with a million-dollar prize up for grabs. The New Year’s Raffle guaranteed 555 winners. Five people took home $1 million each, 50 players received $10,000 each, and 500 players each won $2008.
SACRAMENTO It’s been another strong year for the California Lottery. That’s the report today from Lottery Director Joan Borucki to the Lottery Commission. Borucki presented the 2006-07 Lottery Report to the Public, as well as the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (www.calottery.com/cafr).
The California Lottery returned more than 95 cents of every dollar to the community in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retail commissions, said Borucki. We proudly distributed more than $1 billion to our friends in the education community amounting to more than 1 percent of the state’s education budget. We are honored to be a small part of every student’s life and look forward to the opportunity to create new revenues in the coming year. Total lottery sales for the year were more than $3.3 billion. That sales figure is slightly less than the year before, but California Lottery officials reiterated their long-term strategy to grow sales as presented in the Business Plan in June 2007. The Lottery provided more than $1.7 billion in winnings to players, said Borucki. Retailers earned nearly $234 million in compensation.
